ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS
There are many new items available on the market to help create a more environmentally
sustainable development of which the following are just a few of the examples and
the list is growing daily:
- Insulation for which many materials have been investigated and used, being foam and
foil backed reflective boarding, glass fibre loose and wrapper in foil bags, cavity
bat insulation partial and full fill, sheep’s wool, straw and many more.
- Rainwater and foul water harvesting systems for which the surface water is filtered
and caught in a purpose made tank below ground and a pump within the tank sends the
water back to the property to a header tank and is fed back into the water system
and foul water can be processed through a macerator disc system or reed bed and clean
water can be used for the same reusable purposes as the rainwater harvesting system.
- Use of timber frame construction should be weighed against the use of cement based
products where applicable
- Sustainable heating and electrical devices can be adopted in the form of Ground and
Air source heat pumps and exchangers, Photovoltaic solar collectors to battery systems
for lighting, wind turbines to name but a few for which each has its perquisites
and deficits and should be closely scrutinised for both long and short term benefits
against your construction project.
- Orientation of walls, windows, doors and roof pitch and materials used can dramatically
increase a structures efficiency.
